Who Has the Better Mardi Gras?

Well, I have been to Mobile, Alabama and unfortunately have never been to New Orleans, Louisiana, but it is on my places to go list. Anyways, Mobile is a very nice city on the Gulf and when I visited it my tour guide said that Mardi Gras originated in Mobile before it reached New Orleans and that it may not be better known than Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Yet, they party harder according to the citizens of Mobile and it is more extravagant than what it is in NO and that they taught NO. Is this a Southwestern city rivalry or something cause from what I've heard of Mardi Gras in NO is that it is insane. I did not go to Mobile during Mardi Gras season, but now I intend on going to both and compare them. But, before I do has anyone been to both of them and can you tell me about them?

MG in Mobile is a joke. they throw moon pies and bubble gum. the big day is called Joe Cain day. (one day)

New Orleans has real parades for 3 weeks reaching a fever the last weekend before MG day and ending on Fat Tuesday.

Super crews like Endymion have huge floats with over 100 riders.

In Mobile your average float is similar to the truck floats of New Orleans.

Mobile is proud of it's roots but comparing the two is like asking what's better winning $10 playing bingo or winning the 20 million dollar powerball lotto.

you might find a few college towns that party hard, but when it comes to having a good time or partying anyone that tells you they do it harder or better than mardi gras in new orleans needs to find a new job.

if your going to Mobile take a left or right just past the battleship and head to Dauphin Island, that would be the jewel in the crown.

make no mistake MG in New Orleans is the best.

It depends on what type of experience you want to have.

Mobile did indeed originate Mardi Gras celebrations here in the US, but there is no real rivalry between any cities, it's just that everyone has their preference. Here on the Gulf Coast, Mardi Gras is celebrated from the Florida panhandle well into Texas.

But, getting back to the type of experience you want, Mobile's Mardi Gras is very family oriented compared to New Orleans. If you want crazy fun and debauchery in an adult sort of way, go to New Orleans.

I live in the middle of the two cities on the MS Coast. I've done Mardi Gras in both places, plus here in all the cities at home.

I've been to both and i agree with one of the answers already that it's a family thing MORE in Mobile. They can get crazy just like any other city. But New Orleans is AWESOME… it might have started in Mobile but New Orleans throws a party not no one else. The heart of New Orleans comes out in the Mardi Gras season. Beads of all kinds are thrown… People's southern hospitality comes out. I'm in college majoring in Hospitality & Tourism and everything about new orleans is fun for mardi gras. Mobile doesn't have the whole city involved (my opinion)!!! New Orleans has the whole city just partying it up…. lol

    I ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ U, New Orleans!!!!!!!!!
