What does "Regent Duc d’Orleans" mean? I am doing a research paper on the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Regent means -1. a person who exercises the ruling power in a kingdom during the minority, absence, or disability of the sovereign.
2. a ruler or governor.
3. a member of the governing board of a state university or a state educational system.
4. a university officer who exercises general supervision over the conduct and welfare of the students.
5. (in certain Catholic universities) a member of the religious order who is associated in the administration of a school or college with a layperson who is its dean or director.

Duc means - Duke

d’ Orleans means - of Orleans

So it means a ruler Duke of Orleans

Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Philippe Charles (August 2, 1674 – December 23, 1723) called Duke of Chartres (1674–1701), and then Duke of Orléans (1701–1723) was Regent of France from 1715 to 1723. His regency during the minority of Louis XV being the last regency in the kingdom of France, he is still commonly referred to as le Régent and his regency as la Régence.

You posted this question in the New Orleans section but the Wikipedia links to "Regent Duc d’Orleans" don’t mention the city. New Orleans was named "in honor" of Philip II, reportedly to gain his favor for the struggling colony (Philip II seized power in 1715, only 3 years before the construction of New Orleans began in 1718)

    From Wikipedia:

"It was, from this founding, intended to be an important colonial city. The city was named in honor of the then Regent of France, Philip II, Duke of Orléans. The priest-chronicler Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix described it in 1721 as a place of a hundred wretched hovels in a malarious wet thicket of willows and dwarf palmettos, infested by serpents and alligators; he seems to have been the first, however, to predict for it an imperial future."
