For example, do they let people from out of town come help out for a few days?
Jude, thanks so much for your answer. I'm looking for an interesting family vacation (kids in late teens and adults) for about a week or so. Do the super krews let people get involved in actual float making?
If you're interested in float design, Blaine Kern is the resident float icon. You can also tour his facility on the westbank. Mardigrasworld has more info on that.

Well, I have been to Mobile, Alabama and unfortunately have never been to New Orleans, Louisiana, but it is on my places to go list. Anyways, Mobile is a very nice city on the Gulf and when I visited it my tour guide said that Mardi Gras originated in Mobile before it reached New Orleans and that it may not be better known than Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Yet, they party harder according to the citizens of Mobile and it is more extravagant than what it is in NO and that they taught NO. Is this a Southwestern city rivalry or something cause from what I've heard of Mardi Gras in NO is that it is insane. I did not go to Mobile during Mardi Gras season, but now I intend on going to both and compare them. But, before I do has anyone been to both of them and can you tell me about them?
MG in Mobile is a joke. they throw moon pies and bubble gum. the big day is called Joe Cain day. (one day)
New Orleans has real parades for 3 weeks reaching a fever the last weekend before MG day and ending on Fat Tuesday.
Super crews like Endymion have huge floats with over 100 riders.
In Mobile your average float is similar to the truck floats of New Orleans.
Mobile is proud of it's roots but comparing the two is like asking what's better winning $10 playing bingo or winning the 20 million dollar powerball lotto.
you might find a few college towns that party hard, but when it comes to having a good time or partying anyone that tells you they do it harder or better than mardi gras in new orleans needs to find a new job.
if your going to Mobile take a left or right just past the battleship and head to Dauphin Island, that would be the jewel in the crown.
make no mistake MG in New Orleans is the best.
